Review - Amazing Spider-Man #546
Like many people out there, I disliked One More Day. It didn’t get under my skin enough to make me want to cancel my subscription to ASM or send Marvel a letter that they’ll probably just toss into the shredder but I still thought that the path they chose to cancel out Peter and MJ’s marriage was a low one that really could have been put together much better. Deep down though, I knew that they was a light at the end of the tunnel.
Would Brand New Day be that light? We’ll see.
Dan Slott is a fresh and welcome replacement to the completely drained J. Michael Straczynski. Spider-Man is more at his roots than he’s been in years. It’s fun to finally see the old Spider-Man back instead of the totemic, depressing, organic web-shooter version we’ve been stuck with for the past while. The writing has a little bit of everything in this issue including serious moments with Jameson, action packed moments involving the Spider-Mugger and some awkward moments with Pete and a woman he meets at the bar. Dan Slott does a great job of making up for OMD and introducing all of the new people in Spider-Man’s world.
Steve McNiven’s art rocks. What else do I need to say? He’s Steve McNiven.
I know there’s plenty of people out there who have said that they’re done with this title because of the events of Quesada’s One More Day arc but I would highly suggest to those people that they at least give this issue a read and give Spidey’s new world a test-drive. Who knows, you might like what you see.
I think three times a month is going to work out quite nicely.
