Marvel announced earlier this week that they would be starting up a second Iron Man comic book, Invincible Iron Man, in May to coincide with the release of the movie earlier that month, May 2nd to be exact. This caught me off guard for a number of reasons. For starters, the Iron Man comic that is currently running is far from perfect. In fact, I took it off of my pull list a couple months back because it became, for lack of a better word, terrible. Why Marvel would then decide that they need a second comic with Iron Man as the star is completely beyond me.

Another thing about this new ongoing series that has me confused is the lack of actual fans to necessitate a second comic featuring Iron Man. Correct me if I'm wrong but Iron Man's current comic isn't exactly one of Marvel's best sellers. What makes the house of ideas think that this idea will actually sell? Even if the comic actually takes off and becomes a decent seller for the company, how long until Iron Man: Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. is wiped out completely? Honestly, it's already pretty much run it's coarse so I don't think that discontinuing it in favor of this, much better looking comic, would necessarily be a bad thing.

I understand that Marvel really couldn't let something as huge as a movie release go by and not promote it in some way but this doesn't exactly seem like the most logical way to do things. Who knows though, Marvel might have some master plan going on in the background that could make this whole endeavor make sense. Also, to be honest, I'll probably pick up Invincible Iron Man when it gets released in May. There's no way it could be as bad as the current Iron Man comic so it might actually be worth reading. Matt Fraction writes and Salvador Larroca pens the issue. Sounds like a win-win situation to me.

The issue, which comes with a cover done by Larroca and another 50/50 by Joe Quesada, will be in stores sometime this May following the release of the Iron Man movie on May 2nd.

I have to say, I expect this’ll last about as long as the second F4 book did at best. The movie hype might keep it afloat for a few months but I can’t see how they’re going to make this substantially different from the other Iron Man book.

Like I said in the my post, I really would like to see this series take off and replace the one that’s running right now.

I know for a fact Stark won’t be Director of SHIELD much longer and then it won’t make sense to have a title called “Director of SHIELD”.

    I’m probably wrong though.
