In the past, I’ve had my issues with the way that Bendis writes some of his stories. He likes to pile flashbacks on top of flashbacks until most people have no idea what’s going on. That trend ended some time ago and Brian has since cleaned his writing up a significant amount in order to tell us all a half-decent story instead of a mediocre filler issue similar to the ones we, the New Avengers fans, have been handed for the past couple months. Several big developments take place in this issue including the apparent break-up of Jessica and Luke as well as the physical relocation of the team itself. Overall, good show by Brian Michael Bendis.

With Yu out of the way, good artists now have the chance to take the reins of the title and have a go with it. This month’s artist was Michael Gaydos and, to be honest, he did a pretty good job. The art almost reminded me of a less-polished Epting or Deodato. Next month, David Mack takes control of art duties. Will he be as successful as Gaydos? Probably.

New Avengers #38
★★★★★★★☆☆☆
7.2/10 (How’d you get that?)

In general, this was one of the best issues of New Avengers that’s been released in a long time. It paved the way for a number of big things that are in store for the team such as the Secret Invasion, their new HQ and Luke Cage’s complete breakdown. For a title that was hanging onto my pull list by a thread a couple of months ago, New Avengers has come a long way. It’s still nowhere near the quality that it once was but at least this issue is another step in the right direction.
