Ah, so DC has finished showcasing Gail Simone’s first story arc. I’m going to give a lot of love to Gail right now. She knows how to write Wonder Woman, which is something I haven’t felt since Greg Rucka had written her. The current volume of Wonder Woman had me really annoyed because the characterization of Wonder Wonder just wasn’t right for me.
However, with Gail on the team, it’s kind of like seeing a ray of light in a completely dark cave. You just see it because it’s there. There’s no need to explain why it’s there, or how it works, it’s just there. This is how I feel Wonder Woman is portrayed right now, and it feels so right for her.
I also noticed the characterisation of the other Amazons as well, and that is Alkyone, Charis, Philomena and Myrto, who are the Amazons that were chosen as Hippolyta’s personal guards. They called themselves The Circle of Four. However, they are not happy that Hippolyta is having a baby created for her, that baby that is later known as Diana. They plan to kill the baby because they think this will cause unrest for the other Amazons because they themselves cannot have children. They fail, though, and are sentenced to jail for the rest of their lives, unless they choose to repent, which they don’t do.
One theme I noticed was the problem women have today with having children. There are some unfortunate women who can’t choose to have children, as much as they wish they could. I have heard that Gail has had some problems with that herself, and found that it really hit me with this story arc.
As usual, the art is top notch with the Dodson team, and some contribution from Ron Randall, and as you all know, Aaron Lopresti is joining the creative team soon.
Bottom line: for the people who have been cynical about Gail writing for Wonder Woman, I really do recommend you pick up this story arc, and this issue especially. Wonder Woman is up there where she is meant to be, and I can only imagine it getting better and better with Gail writing Wonder Woman.
And even if you don’t like the story, this issue has heaps of butt-kicking.
