msmarveltodieWhenever Marvel does these large company-wide crossovers, characters are killed. House of M killed Hawkeye...again. During Civil War, it was Goliath. Shortly afterward, it was Steve Rogers. So, with Secret Invasion looming on the horizon, who's up on the chopping block at Marvel? Let's take a look at some of the possibilities and their odds.

  • Ms. Marvel - 500:1
  • She's a big part of the Marvel universe right now with her series picking up steam as well as her role as leader of the Mighty Avengers. Will she get axed? Not likely.

  • Iron Man - 600:1
  • Much like Ms. Marvel, the Marvel U wouldn't exactly be able to function without Stark. As the leader of S.H.I.E.L.D., he's got somewhat of an immunity as far as his character is concerned. Don't expect to see him in a coffin any time soon.

  • The Sentry - 10:1
  • He's not only disliked by many Marvel fans but also, according to his wife, a ticking time bomb that could go off at any moment. Weather it's by Stark's hand or that of a Skrull, I wouldn't be shocked to see Rob Reynolds fall during the Invasion.

  • Captain Marvel - 5:1
  • So, Cap's back, which is good, but apparently he's not the real Captain Marvel. His series is only a 5-part mini and he's scheduled to die anyway. Will it be during the Secret Invasion? Bank on it.

  • Luke Cage - 10:1
  • I know you're probably thinking, "Why him?" but it could honestly happen. I know that there's a Skrull in the New Avengers and I'm sure they've got some sort of plan to take care of Mr. Cage and the rest of his marry band of resistance fighters. With his marriage pretty much over, Cage seems like the only logical person on the team that could die.

  • Steve Rogers - ???:???
  • I said this during World War Hulk just to make sure I had all the possibilities covered. It only makes sense that I go over this one again. It's comics, anything can happen. Will Cap make a triumphant return only to be killed again during a Skrull attack? If it'll make Marvel some quick cash, it's not totally impossible.

If you're looking for something else to satisfy your Skrully urges, make sure you check out our manifest of the current Skrulls that have appeared in the Marvel U. Also, if you've got your own predictions for Secret Invasion, I'd love to hear them. Who do you think will make it out alive and who won't be quite so fortunate?

As always, leave a comment and let me know what's on your mind!

It’s hard to say. I don’t think Iron Man is a Skrull, though he actually apologised to Agent Sum in Ms. Marvel when he called for help using a secret number code, but didn’t actually get help. I thought that was Skrull behaviour. But then he says that Ms. Marvel is a Skrull. So that made me think he’s a Skrull even more because he could possibly be trying to get rid of Ms. Marvel because of some future storyline that will put her in the spotlight. But then I think that Iron Man will probably be important in future stories as well. So I’m pretty confused about those two. However, Bendis has said that Iron Man isn’t a Skrull full stop.

Another character I think is a Skrull is Cyclops. He’s been acting really weird by letting Wolverine go violent on other mutants.

I really hope you’re wrong about Ms Marvel - I want her DEAD!

No. I don’t want Cyclops to be a Skrull but I want Cyclops DEAD. I would take lots of muties dead over Ms. Marvel! Throw in some Young Avengers and I would be a happy camper! :P

Okay, I’m willing to sacrifice Cyclops if it means Ms. Marvel will go down, too.

In fact, if it means Ms Marvel goes down, I’ll shoot Cyclops in the head myself.

Don’t think Ms. Marvel will die. She is just starting to get popular. I mean, she even got praise for the amount of issues she’s got right now (like, 24).

Along with She-Hulk, the two of them are perhaps the most popular FEMALE characters in the Marvel U.

Agreed. I don’t think that, since so much work has gone into her at this point, Marvel will just throw it all away and killer her off. As for Cyclops, I couldn’t care less what happens to him.

But Ms Marvel SUCKS! If Ms Marvel and She-Hulk are the most popular female characters in the Marvel U, that speaks alot more poorly about the state of the Marvel U than well about Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk.

    Kill ‘em all, I say.

I want to see more Hellcat, less She-Hulk. Plus more Cyclops dying mixed with shredded Young Avengers and Marvel needs to man up and just bring back the fricken Vision, not this teen agnst, I-should-be-a-mutie-emo version they got going on.

I think Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk are only popular because they get more profile these days than others like Janet Pym, Sue Richards and Storm, which is pretty sad.

Crackerbob - As someone who feels that there need to be more female characters up there with Wolverine, Superman and Spider-Man, killing of Ms. Marvel is something that would really piss me off, so I don’t want them to actually kill her off. Like I said before, her getting praise for reaching the amount of issues she has reached says something about the female characters and the way they’re portrayed or written.

In reply to Robert’s comment; yeah, that may be so, but I’d like to see some solo series from those characters. I think that’s the only way they’ll get the popularity they need. I would really like to see Sue Storm with her own series; I would definitely hit that. Plus if she makes it over 20 issues with increasing popularity, then she has certainly done better than Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk. You should write a letter.

Wendy, I agree with you that there need to be more high-profile and quality female characters, but I think that hyping and giving a free pass to crappy characters just because they’re female sets the entire concept back.

My opinion is that Ms. Marvel is a crappy character, whatever her gender, thus I think she should be killed off and/or sent to the D-List hell she came from. I’ll never agree that a character shouldn’t be touched because they belong to a group that should be better represented. If anything, I’d think having a crappy character as one of the very few high-profile examples of a group would be doing that group a disservice.

Although, considering her continuing run and apparent popularity, I seem to be in the minority in my feelings on Ms. Marvel, and that’s fine.

To get in on this debate, there are plenty of viable female characters in the Marvel universe, but if you’re not a fan of the mutant stories with the X-Men, with characters like Rogue, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, and Storm. The X-Men definately have the highest number of confident, powerful female figures. However, you have characters like Black Widow IS a strong figure, albeit a shaky figure in terms of strength of character.

Do you mean killing off Batman or moving him to Marvel?

Either way, I’ll have to go with no. I don’t see Batman working at Marvel, somehow.

I think if he was handled by Brubaker or maybe Bendis, when he was working on Daredevil, he could work out. Maybe not as well as the DC writers use him…but it could work.

As for killing him off, it just can’t happen. He’s arguably DC’s biggest draw. If he dies, the fans would riot.

I think Brubaker or maybe Bendis could handle him, but I don’t think Batman in the Marvel U. is Batman, if that makes any sense.

Part of what makes Batman special as this dark, flawed, deeply conflicted hero is being surrounded by people like Superman and whatnot.

Take Batman out of his surroundings in the Marvel U. and you basically have Moon Knight.

Good call. I’ve always thought of Moon Knight as being the Batman of the Marvel U…but not nearly as well used.

Yeah, I think they play up the crazy brutality angle a bit too much with Moon Knight and it gets kinda boring after awhile.

But edgy and gritty in comparison to the Marvel U is a bit more out there than edgy and gritty in comparison to the DCU, which is kinda my point.

Mike Haynes: Good call. I’ve always thought of Moon Knight as being the Batman of the Marvel U…but not nearly as well used.

Really? I never really saw Moon Knight that way. It was always Daredevil that I felt was most like Batman. Maybe not as much now(I haven’t been keeping up on Daredevil lately so I don’t know.) But their ideals are very similair and they are both most well known for having the lack of something. With Batman it’s having no powers and with Daredevil it was the blindness.

Moving on to the topic at hand though. Even though I never really liked Ms. Marvel I don’t think they will kill her. Wendy Skeleton is right, her popularity is growing, Marvel would be shooting themselves in the foot… Again…. For like the fifth time in 6 months….. Seriously….

    Ok I’m done now.
