After reading RJP's post this week regarding Final Crisis, it got me thinking about the future for DC. More specifically, it got me thinking about the upcoming Trinity weekly series that the company has planned. With the success of 52 and then the disappointing performance of Countdown, I'm still up in the air about what to expect from the team of Kurt Busiek and Mark Bagley. It's a pretty big investment to jump into weekly series and, if it starts well and winds up going sour, I might be turned off of almost anything DC altogether. On the other hand, it could be a great comic that I would regret not getting into from the get-go. Decisions, decisions...
For those out of the know, Trinity will be a little different than the previous weekly comics created by DC for the fact that it's actually made up of two different stories. The first 12 pages are to be dedicated to telling the actual Trinity story by Busiek and Bagley involving Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. The remaining 10 pages will be made up of one-shot stories as well as miscellaneous continuing stories by Busiek and Fabian Nicieza with artwork done by various guest artists.
Speaking of art, if you've read any of my Mighty Avengers reviews since Mark Bagley's been doing the art, you no doubt have realized that I'm personally not a fan of his work. To me, it feels very old fashioned and rushed to the point where it just seems sloppy. While I understand that time is a priority when you're penciling a comic book that gets released every week, I think it could make his art work appear even more rushed than it was before. As for his work being old fashioned, I think it'll fit well with the general theme of the comic as it's focusing on three of the oldest characters that DC has under it's belt.
As far as the writing aspect is concerned, it makes much more sense that they go with the three big guns of their comics instead of featuring another year of up-and-coming characters, especially after Countdown. The fans deserve to see the biggest and best that the company has to offer and, while I might still be on the fence about it all, Trinity seems like it'll offer just that. While there has been a couple issues in each of the previous weekly comics that featured one or two of the trinity, the focus has been primarily on showing off the lesser known or lesser cared about characters of the DC world and I'm glad to see that's changed a little bit.
Will I be picking up Trinity? Yes, I probably will. Here's a couple links for those of you out there that are looking for a little bit more information on the upcoming series by DC.
