While most people were wrapped up in the...exciting announcement regarding Marvel Apes, one of the bigger announcements from the NYCC went somewhat unnoticed, at least by me anyway, until now. Power Girl is finally getting her own ongoing series.

I'm excited about this for a number of reasons but the biggest would have to be the fact that Power Girl has always appeared to be one of those characters that could be a huge draw for the company if only there was someone writing that knew how to properly use her character and keep her within her own realm. My hopes with this upcoming series is that she'll finally become one of DC's classic characters and break free of the confusing, misused, misunderstood character she's been portrayed as for the past couple of years.
Another thing about this series that I'm looking forward to is seeing the supporting cast of villains that have been announced as part of Power Girl's exclusive rogues gallery. If she's expected to survive on her own, it's important for her to have a set of baddies to call her own. That being said, I'm hoping that we see some crossovers every now and then to keep her a part of the overall universe of the DCU. That is, if she stays in the main DCU. The reason I say this is that the Justice Society of America Annual focuses on Power Girl visiting Earth-two and is, according to Dan Didio, going to act as a bridge between the Power Girl from the current JSA title and the one we'll see in the ongoing series. Could she be staying in this Earth-2 permanently? Is that even possible following the actions of Infinite Crisis? With DC, you never really know.
Moving on, how difficult will it be for Jimmy Palmiotti and Justin Gray to move Power Girl from the status of, for lack of better words, minor star into the headliner of a comic book? It's been done before and I'm sure it can be done again but does the character of Power Girl have what it takes to make that transition? I think so but the writing will have to be very well thought out and well put together to make sure that this doesn't turn into a "it's a comic about chick with a rack" kind of book. Creatively, there's many different paths this comic can go and I'm hoping that they manage to keep this in mind while working out the details for the title.
If you're looking for a little bit more regarding the Power Girl ongoing series, be sure to check out Newsarama for the interview with Dan Didio regarding the series. There's also a nice interview with the writers as well.
No official date for the series has been announced but when I hear it, you'll hear it. To be honest, you'll probably hear it before I will.
Let me know, will ya?

I think Power Girl deserves her own series, but the sense I get from the creator interviews that this series will be separate from what’s been established lately about Kara — nary a mention of Earth-2 in the interviews — worries me. Part of what makes Power Girl interesting is her relationship with the JSA and Earth-2, and I wonder how well the series will do without those aspects.

I agree. I’ll be picking it up for sure regardless but I’m really hoping that the writers don’t drop the ball with this one.

I’m very glad that Amanda Conner is the artist! She’s such a talented one at that.
