Spider-Man’s Latest Foe: Anti-Venom

Just when you thought that Spider-Man’s Brand New Day was starting to lose steam, the creative team unveils their newest creation: Anti-Venom.

About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

In Joe Quesada’s “Cup of Joe” on MySpace Comic Books last week, he got an interesting piece of mail from someone asking him a very special favor. Here’s what the message was:

Hey Joe, could you create a new symbiote character for Spider-Man to fight?

Joe’s reply?

…hmmm…let me think about it for a second.

Okay, you got it!

Apparently, he wasn’t kidding around. Coming to an Amazing Spider-Man comic near you this June is Anti-Venom! Wondering what the hell an Anti-Venom looks like? Take a peek and the latest member of the Marvel symbiote family:

Taking on this interesting new angle of the Spider-Man universe is none other than Dan Slott and the legend himself, John Romita Jr. With this team in the driver’s seat, you know it’s going to be one hell of a ride. Slott’s opening arc in the Brand New Day saga was arguably the best so far in the newly launched series and when he’s paired up with JRJR, it can only get better.

In addition to this already blockbuster revelation, EW.com unveiled a photo of the summer Spider-Man comics that shows photos of not only Spider-Man but Mary Jane, Venom, Anti-Venom and a special mystery person who is standing at the grave of Kraven The Hunter. Here’s the photo for those curious people out there that originally appeared on EW.com’s website:

This summer in Spider-Man

Frenemy Eddie Brock, possibly still cancer-ridden, is back, as is Norman Osborn, better known as mad-genius nemesis the Green Goblin. Meanwhile, on the home front, Mary Jane Watson is in the house, so to speak. (From EW.com)

If you’re wanting to read what little details have been revealed, check out Marvel.com or EW.com for all the details. I’ll save you a little bit of time and effort by telling you that there’s not much there that isn’t already covered right here.

We’re good like that.

    ….damn.

    ….sweet.

Yeah… still not enough to get me to read Spiderman.

    Good to know.

Xers, any theories on Eddie Brock’s return? You think it’ll actually be him or will it be some kind of clone or something? What will they do with Mac Gargon?

    So many questions.

Ok, this IS enough to get me reading Spidey again. Crackerbob must have alot more hidden agenda concerning what it will take to get him to pick up another issue but this will do it for me.

THAT is what I like to hear.

No hidden agenda, I just never was much of a spider-fan, so it was very easy for me to drop it and it would likely take something HUGE to get me to read it again.

Even if I did pick up Spidey, I’d probably drop it again shortly thereafter.

In short, I’m not the target audience and likely a lost cause, spider-wise

    @somebody: Sounds about right.
