In a recent interview with the nice folks at Comic Book Resources, Brian Reed talked a little bit about the upcoming Secret Invasion tie-in issue set for Spider-Man's world. While the issue isn't released until August Spider-Man fanatics like myself can't help but wonder what's in store for the webhead in this massive company-wide crossover. This interview helped shed at least a little bit of light on that.

"Secret Invasion: Spider-Man - Brand New Day" was born when Reed and "Amazing Spider-Man" editor Stephen Wacker were discussing the best way to tie the book into the Secret Invasion event. "Steve wanted to do a Spider-Man tie-in but he didn't want it to be just a cashing-in sort of thing," [...] "So we talked about it and what it came down to was the question of, 'What are all these other characters, who've been introduced in 'Brand New Day,' doing?' It also gave us an opportunity to tie all the events going on in 'Amazing Spider-Man' into the rest of the Marvel Universe.

Things like that are really good to hear as a comic fan. Not only is this not some "cash-grab" issue in the mind Steve Wacker but Brian Reed seems to legitimately want to make this comic really stand out and be a great piece of the Spider-Man history. Another thing that many fans, myself included, have been wondering is just how Spider-Man's new world, post One More Day, actually fits into the rest of the Marvel U. There were a number of universe altering changes that went down in those few issues and, until now, nothing has really tied Spider-Man back in with the rest of the world aside from a small cameo by Wolverine and Dr. Strange.

"Secret Invasion: Spider-Man" is not, said Reed, a superhero story, although it is being told like one. Explained the writer, "This is the exact opposite of 'Secret Invasion: Frontline,' which is very grim and dire. In 'Frontline' when a Skrull is chasing you, you're a dead man, but in this series if a Skrull shows up you've got a chance to outrun it. 'Secret Invasion: Spider-Man' is more about the action, adventure and fun of a Spider-Man book."

So it's not a superhero book? Hmm. I'm somewhat confused...but interested nonetheless. There's very little doubt in my mind that Reed will disappoint with this comic. His work on Captain Marvel and New Avengers Illuminati (Alongside Brian Michael Bendis) were both great examples of just what he can do.
