Rapid Fire Reviews: May 23rd, 2008

In a week that sees Justice Society, Justice League and Mighty Avengers arrive in stores, which would come out on top as our pick of the week?

About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

This was a great week for comics! It’s rare that not only does Justice League and Justice Society be released in the same week but Mighty Avengers as well? The comic industry is practically spoiling us. Add the latest issue of Amazing Spider-Man into the mix and you’ve got all the ingredients for a really awesome week of comic books. Enough talking though. Ready for some reviews on full-auto? Let’s roll!

Justice Society of America #15 (DC)
Thy Kingdom Come continues this month as we see the debut of the Kingdom Come Green Lantern and Obsidian alongside the rest of the JSA who collide head-on with the menace that is Gog. As usual, Geoff Johns continues to juggle an entire armada of characters while still maintaining a coherent and fairly interesting story that makes use of all the characters in the book in one way or another. Dale Eaglesham, as always, can do no wrong with artwork that has become just as important to the title as Johns’ writing. My only complaint is that this Gog story seems to have been going on for far too long and I’m pretty certain that I’ll be much happier with the comic when it’s done and over with and we’re moving into something fresh and new.

Amazing Spider-Man #560 (Marvel)
Dan Slott and Marcos Martin return for the second part of the Peter Parker: Paparazzi storyline. As always, Dan Slott’s work really shines with this title. Like I’ve said in the past, he was meant to write this book. The only real failure in this issue would have to be the artwork by Martin which, while it’s not bad work, just doesn’t seem to mesh well with the look and feel of the comic book at all. He, much like Chris Bachalo (The artist from a couple issues back), ranks amongst my least favorite artists to work on this title since the relaunch. I’m not going to ruin anything for those of you who haven’t read this issue but with the debut of Paper Doll as well as a MASSIVE twist to close the comic, it’s pretty safe to say that things are going to be getting very interesting in the pages of ASM.
★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8.0/10

Mighty Avengers #14 (Marvel)
Wait a sec…an entire issue of Mighty Avengers devoted to the Sentry? Like I said, we’re getting spoiled this week. This issue focuses mostly on the Skrull’s plot to try and replace or simply eliminate the Sentry as he’s obviously one of the few people that poses a serious threat to the Secret Invasion. Bendis keeps his firm grip on not only the Mighty Avengers team but also on much of the Marvel U. This shouldn’t surprise since he’s almost running the entire thing singlehandedly. Khoi Fham, this issue’s artist, is right on the ball and, when Secret Invasion comes to a close, I’d really like to see Fham take over on a title like this full-time. Overall, this is another great issue in the Mighty Avengers series that will probably be enjoyed by all Sentry fans or Secret Invasion readers.
★★★★★★★★☆☆ - 8.2/10

Justice League of America #21

Justice League of America #21 (DC)
In a surprise twist, JLA #21 goes within a couple of short weeks from being one of the worst comics on my pull-list to the best comic of the week. In this issue, we get a glimpse at not only the new part of the JLA headquarters as well as the evil Libra, one of the main players in Final Crisis which kicks off next week, but we also see somewhat of a return from Martian Manhunter who’s been missing from the pages of JLA for some time now. McDuffie, for the first time in a while, manages to deliver a story that doesn’t feel like complete filler. Carlos Pacheco and Jesús Meriño do a fantastic on art duties that really help move McDuffie’s story along nicely. In general, this is a great issue that should definitely tide fans over until Final Crisis #1 hits shelves next week.
★★★★★★★★½☆ - 8.7/10

After reading JLA #21 I have to agree with what you said. I think it’s a great intro into FInal Crisis.
