Marvel Announces The Age Of The Sentry

In a huge announcement by Marvel at this year’s Philly Wizard World, Sentry will be getting another mini-series.

About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

One of the bigger subjects lately in our weekly Comic Book Roundtable has been The Sentry and his involvement in the current Secret Invasion taking place in the Marvel Universe. Having been a fan of the character since he first appeared in New Avengers a couple of years ago, I’ve been hoping for a solo series that would give fans of the Sentry, such as myself, a little bit more info on the character and his history. Looks like we Sentry fans finally got what we wanted:

There exists a secret history of the “Golden Guardian of Good,” the Sentry. Lost to the world, the amazing adventures of the man with the “power of a million exploding suns” tell the tale of one of the greatest super heroes of the Silver Age of comics. Yet, no one remembers them.

Marvel Comics is proud to unlock THE AGE OF THE SENTRY, a limited series which details the Silver Age exploits of perhaps the most enigmatic Marvel hero of all.

That’s right. Marvel is doing a Sentry mini-series set in the Silver Age of Marvel’s comic history. They’ve done countless flashbacks inside other comics, such as New Avengers, Mighty Avengers and the Sentry Reborn mini-series, but no series has ever taken the readers deeper into the history of the character until this point in time.

The Age of the Sentry!

This series won’t just be limited to a single story either. According to Marvel, there’s an entire team of people working on making this book not only good but have it bring the old school feel of Marvel’s comics from the 60s back into play during the series.

“The book will feature two stories of equal length for the first five issues, then a full-length story for issue #6,” says Paniccia. “[Writer] Jeff Parker and [artist] Nick Dragotta are working on all six issues. Paul Tobin is writing the second stories in issues #1 thru #5, with a variety of artists.”

I’ve always said that, given the proper writer, Sentry could be one of the stars of the Marvel Universe. Will Jeff Parker and Paul Tobin be those writers? I suppose only time will tell. As you can see from the drawings from Marvel.com, artist Nick Dragotta seems to have a firm grasp on not only the character but the Silver Age style as well. It should be interesting to see what the finished product looks like. I’ve been waiting for a series like this since World War Hulk so I’m really hoping that it doesn’t disappoint and, while there’s no release date set for Age of The Sentry, you better believe you’ll find it here once I get my hands on it.

Why do you have to come on here and kill my buzz like that?

Having never read into the Sentry, I wouldn’t expect you to understand why they’re doing the story that way. As someone who’s read all of his previous mini-series’, and is actually a fan of the character, I think it not only makes sense but it actually sounds interesting.

I’m definatly excited however I would rather have a story set in the present day.

I hope I get to see the Blue Bafoon in action!

    …or perhaps the General?

Past or present, The Sentry is still awesome.

You know I’m just teasing, Mike.

I’ve actually read all of the Sentry’s series, but he just doesn’t appeal to me. I understand why they’re doing it that way, but that doesn’t make it sound less lame to me. But, as with Spider-man, I’m not the target audience here.
