Warren Ellis’ FreakAngels Web Comic

Looking for something new to read that’s not only free but could be accessed a couple minutes after reading this? Look no further than FreakAngels.

About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

As I’ve said in the past, I’m really not much of a web comic kinda guy. I follow a very select few comics online and ignore pretty much all of the others. Well, I’m somewhat pleased to say that I’ve abandoned my semi-elitist ways and embraced another web comic in the form of FreakAngels, a weekly comic written by fan favorite Warren Ellis with artwork by Paul Duffield.

The landscape of FreakAngels

The comic focuses, for the most part, on a small group of people known as the FreakAngels who live in a post-apocalyptic version of England that sees the entire city flooded and almost completely abandoned. This small gang of friends isn’t exactly made up of normal people either. The group actually consists of young people who all have psychic abilities that allow them to not only communicate with one another telepathically but also to dig into the minds of others as well. When one of these FreakAngels, whose name is Mark, is outed by the others for is radical views on how the group could possibly shape the future, he disappears only to meet a young girl named Alice. Mark leaves somewhat of a bad first impression on her and then lures her to the remaining FreakAngels where she takes to them in a pretty hostile fashion. What follows next is the aftermath of that event on the group as well as the next step in a rather bleak future.

The action of FreakAngels

Overall, FreakAngels is a great comic for a number of reasons. It’s got an interesting and very original story by Ellis. It’s also got fantastic artwork by Duffield that I know a number of people out there will definitely enjoy as it’s not only really good but it really fits the setting and tone of Ellis’ writing style quite nicely. So, all this being said, if you’re looking for something new that is good and won’t cost you a cent, give FreakAngels a read. For more information on the web comic, check out the official website which, in addition to the comic itself, features downloads, RSS feeds, FAQs, and even a message board. Best of all, as I’ve said a couple of times already, it’s all absolutely free.
