Review: New Avengers #1

With my comics delayed until tomorrow, there’s no Secret Invasion #3 review. Instead, let’s take a peek at the first issue of Bendis’ New Avengers title from 2004.

About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

While those of you who follow POA on Twitter may have first believed, I’m supposed to be reviewing Secret Invasion #3. Well, it turns out that there were a couple delays that seem to have pushed the comics shipments back until tomorrow. This leaves me with no S.I. #3 to review. So, taking a page out of the book of Comics Daily, I’ve grabbed a random comic, which happens to be New Avengers #1, out of my collection and have decided to review that instead. The actual review of Secret Invasion #3 will be along tomorrow.

Seems like only yesterday that the original Avengers were disbanded and disassembled. Back in late 2004, Marvel decided that it was time to give the Avengers a much needed makeover. The two men in charge of this makeover were none other than Brian Michael Bendis and artist David Finch. How would this new team stack up against the classic comic that had been running since 1963? Let’s take a closer look at the opening shot of the New Avengers title.

New Avengers #1

Well, to be honest, It stacks up pretty well. If there was anyone on the Marvel roster of writers that could unquestionably handle a comic like this, it’s Brian Michael Bendis. Everything, for the most part, works and works well in this issue. Nothing about the comic feels overly forced and, unlike Bendis’ more recent Mighty Avengers comic, the team doesn’t feel like they’ve been put together against their will. The entire meeting of the heroes feels haphazard and random. There’s also a number of cameos by other characters as well that make the comic feel like it’s a part of a larger universe and not just a book with all the Marvel heavyweights in it.
