To Skaar Or Not To Skaar

Being released this week is Skaar: Son of Hulk. Is the comic, written by Planet Hulk and World War Hulk writer Greg Pak, worth the time and money?

About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

This week, memories of World War Hulk, as well as Planet Hulk, are no doubt going to surface as we come face to face at last with Skaar: Son of Hulk. Will it sell? Probably not. With Hulk being horribly mismanaged since the closing shot of WWH, I hardly believe that anyone even cares about Big Green anymore let alone his son but let’s take a closer look.

Skaar - Who cares?

To be fair, there are a number of good things about the comic that could actually make it succeed. I mean right up until Jeph Loeb’s Hulk comic kicked off, it was looking like Greg Pak had a stranglehold on the world of the Hulk and that on his watch, nothing was going to happen to him that would turn away fans of the Planet Hulk epic and the World War Hulk aftermath event. That being said, the first issue of the Red Hulk comic has left somewhat of a bad taste in a number of fans mouths. Hell, I’m losing interest in the Hulk brand just mentioning that comic. How will the creative team be able to break free of such a horrible first thought that many fans are no doubt going to have when they see the new Skaar comic?

Skaar...again

Maybe I’m being a little harsh. Skaar is a completely different comic that is in no way associated with Jeph Loeb. He has, from what I know, absolutely no impact on the story of this book. Let’s take a look at some of the other high points of the new Skaar: Son of Hulk comic.

  • Greg Pak is writing it
  • He did a pretty good job with his Planet Hulk run as well as the World War Hulk comics. He obviously knows what he’s doing when it comes to anything Hulk-related so I’m sure the comic will be well written. Like I said earlier, Loeb won’t be coming anywhere near this one so I think we’re all pretty safe from his reign of terror. Pak’s said in interviews that this is going to be a completely new epic that will make up the third part of the massive Hulk trilogy he started with Planet Hulk. Sounds good to me!

  • Ron Garney is drawing it
  • I recently got into Wolverine simply because Garney was drawing it so I don’t see how Skaar could possibly be any different. Garney’s rough, aggressive style will probably translate very well into the pages of a presumably violent and action-packed comic like this. If he stays on for the long haul, I could definitely see giving this comic book a chance to win a spot on my pull-list.

Aside from those couple of details, we don’t really know much about Skaar. Considering those points though, it makes sense to go out and grab a copy of the first issue just to see what it’s all about, which I think I’ll be doing. Expect a full review of Skaar: Son of Hulk #1 on Panels of Awesome in the near future.

What are your thoughts on Skaar? Good or bad, leave me a comment and let me know.

I’ll be reading it, if for no other reason than Loeb isn’t touching it.

    I agree.

If he even had a tiny say in the comic, I’d be avoiding it like the plague.
