About this author:

Mike's love for Spider-Man knows no bounds. He is the owner, principal writer, janitor and editor for Panels of Awesome and any of the other sites under the POA umbrella. Fear his rule.

I posted a little while ago about some of the comics that were coming and going from my pull list in which I mentioned that I had a couple of titles I was considering dropping and picking up. A couple of things have changed since then so I figured I’d give a few of you out there an update on what’s going through my head lately.

Thunderbolts:
I had pretty much decided that I’d be stop, drop and rolling my way out of anything Thunderbolts now that Warren Ellis had jumped ship. That was until Joe Q showed off this epic cover by Billy Tan, who’s going to be the next full-time artist on New Avengers. Give it a look:

Thunderbolts #125

It’s hard for me to turn my back completely on a title that’s really been so kind to me over the past year. I suppose I’ll have to see what the next couple issues are like before I make any serious decisions on that front. Next!

Trinity:
I gave the comic one month and it’s done nothing but disappoint. Weather it’s the sloppy art by Bagley or the completely uninteresting and dull stories by Busiek, the comic just doesn’t work for me. Another 48 issues could drive me insane and run me out of money. Instead, I’ll spend my dollars on a much better comic book thank you very much.
Status: Dropped

Batman:
Morrison’s had a good run, as confusing as it might be, but I’m not quite convinced this title will keep my interest in the long run. Sure, Batman R.I.P. will probably be pretty good but where do you go from there? Not to mention, with Detective Comics sitting comfortably on my list, I just don’t know if there’s a reason to keep this one on there. How R.I.P. plays out will make the difference between a drop and pick-up for this title.
Status: Undecided

Booster Gold:
I know this title wasn’t discussed on the initial post but it’s a book that’s definitely been losing it’s appeal progressively for a number of issues now. Anyone else feeling the same thing lately?
Status: Dropped

Invincible Iron Man #3

Invincible Iron Man:
With the sudden departure of Booster Gold, there’s an immediate opening on my pull list. Filling that void will be none other than Matt Fraction and Salvador Larroca’s Invincible Iron Man comic. After rereading through both issue one and two, I’m more than happy to toss this book on my list since both issues have proven themselves as solid pieces of writing with fantastic visuals. Larroca and Fraction rock.

Batman Confidential:
I’ve come to the conclusion that, while this current arc has been pretty fun to read, the ride’s probably going to be coming to a crashing halt when the arc draws to a close. That being said, I’ll be sticking around to see where Commissioner Gordon’s notebook ends up but I’ll be jumping ship at the conclusion of issue #21. There’s just not enough Bat there to keep me entertained in the long run.
Status: Dropped

Young X-Men #3

Young X-Men:
Having now read through the third issue of this mediocre title, I’m nowhere closer to making up my mind on the decision of weather or not to avoid it completely or become a full-time reader of the book. It’s got great art but I feel like the story is somewhat poorly put together and the characters, for the most part, are completely uninteresting and boring to read about. All that said, I still find it difficult to avoid one of Terry Dodson’s covers so those guys in the Marvel marketing department seem to know what to do to keep me hanging on by a thread.
Status: Undecided

So, I guess there’s still plenty to think about before this issue is completely put to rest. Stay tuned for the third part of this epic saga as I announce my cuts and additions as well as my full pull list. I know all of you will be waiting in anticipation for that.

Trinity #3 was just too weird for me. I mean, the most interesting part was when those two bad guys were discussing what they were talking about. But then, at the end, Superman got punched in the face and I’m just like, “WTF?” Superman gets punched in the face all the time.

I actually only started reading Batman Confidential because I saw Batgirl on the cover. I was intrigued, and I think I’ll continue reading this story arc and maybe a few future issues if it continues to be this good. I love the writing in it, I love the fast-paced chasing scenes and I love the witty dialogue that Batgirl and Catwoman have together.

@WendySkeleton: Yeah, I’ve really been enjoying Confidential. I’ll be kicking myself if it keeps going after this arc but if I decide to jump back on, so be it.

Yeah, something about Superman’s hit in Trinity #3 just didn’t sit well with me either. There’s really something about that whole series that doesn’t fit. I don’t know exactly what it is.

It’s not a good thing, whatever it is.

    @Mikey:
I’m on the fence about Trinity myself. I want to keep it on my list because it shows so much potential at being a great book. On the other hand it’s been a real yawn so far.

As far as Batman Confidential, well, you all know I go Super Fanboy over anything Batman. I’m also loving the current Arc, I have yet to find anyone who doesn’t.

Young X-men I just flat out don’t want to touch. That shit is like Kryptonite for me.

I’m worried about the direction that Thunderbolts will take, I’ll give it 3 issues then I’ll decide.

Booster Gold has actually been becoming more of a temptation for me, though I hate the character to death I hear great things about the current titles so I’ve been debating on whether or not to give Booster a shot.

Invincible Iron Man is one I haven’t had a chance to read yet so I have nothing to say about it.

And touching on one of your other blogs; Why so much hate for Jeph Loeb? I honestly love his work. Granted Hulk #4 was…. Well… Not so good. But other than that I’ve been a huge fan of his, so what’s the beef?

I don’t completely hate the guy. He’s done a lot of great stuff like Hush, Long Halloween, Spider-Man Blue, etc. The only thing is that I think it’s gone to his head or something because most of his work in the past little while has been very poorly done. Ultimates 3 makes no sense. Hulk is terrible when compared to his previous work as well as the work of Greg Pak in the recent Incredible Hulk title.

I don’t hate Loeb, I just think that he really needs to take some time and reestablish himself. He needs to take his work more seriously than just the “Let’s have Hulk beating up The Watcher! That’ll be funny!” kind of writing he’s been producing as of late.

I’m really hoping that his Captain America: White book, drawn by Tim Sale, kicks some serious ass and shuts me, along with his other critics, right up.

Booster Gold was pretty solid. It’s been losing it’s focus as of late and it seems like Geoff Johns is handing off the writing duties more and more to Jeff Katz. Still good, just not quite as good.

I’m with Mike on the Jeph Loeb thing. My problem with him is similar to my occasional issues with Warren Ellis. I know the man is capable of works of sheer brilliance, so when he churns out subpar work or even mediocre work, I’m very hard on him. For the past year or two or three, his work has been mediocre at best and it pisses me off.

Ultimates 3 is shit (fucking ROBOTS!??!) and Hulk really isn’t very good. When I heard that Red Hulk was going to punch the Watcher (back before the series even launched) I thought it could be kinda funny and was interested to see how that would come to be. The execution was completely ham-handed and the gag was wedged in for a cheap laugh.

    Loeb can do better.

    Loeb NEEDS to do better.

I don’t even know if I’d call his work mediocre. It’s borderline unreadable.

    Thanks for the comments everyone!

Well, yeah, but I was trying to be charitable.

Y’all showing up for Roundtable tonight?
