Welcome back, one and all to the Awesome Arena! Taking a look back at last round, we saw Green Lantern, despite my first inclination, defeat his former Justice League partner and long time friend, Green Arrow. On a positive note, Arrow definitely outlasted Iron Fist, which is a plus. Wondering what the current ladder looks like? Here's a peek. As for this week, we have a blockbuster match-up between Wolverine and The Hulk. Let's take a look at this week's competitors, shall we?

Combatant #1 - Wolverine
First Appearance:
The Incredible Hulk #180 (October 1974)
Background:
Recruited by several military units during his life, the man known as Logan was principally used by the CIA's Team X division. While part of this group, he was given memory implants that were intended to wipe his mind of all memories of his past. Also, while on a mission, Logan was captured and experimented on as part of the Weapon X program. During his captivity, his skeletal structure was laced with Adamantium and he was tortured and experimented on. Upon his escape, Wolverine joined forces with such teams as X-Force, the X-Men and the New Avengers.
Powers & Abilities:
- Regenerative healing factor
- Superhuman senses, strength, stamina, agility, and reflexes
- Adamantium-laced skeletal structure with retractable claws
- Expert martial artist
Combatant #2 - The Hulk
First Appearance:
The Incredible Hulk #1 (May 1962)
Background:
During an experiment with Gamma radiation, while trying to save the life of an innocent boy, scientist Bruce Banner was caught in the middle of a massive explosion. Surviving the incident with very little damage done physically to his body, Banner appeared to have suffered no serious side effects to the blast. That is until he later transformed into a massive lumbering beast known only as The Hulk.
Powers & Abilities:
- Superhuman strength, stamina, and durability
- Regenerative healing factor
- Genius level intellect in certain incarnations
The Fight:
For the record, I'd just like to go on record as saying that I think it's pretty interesting that Wolverine's first appearance in comics was actually in a Hulk title. These two were meant to fight each other. As far as this all-out brawl is concerned, it's a coin-toss of a match. On one hand, you have Wolverine with his healing factor and reckless battle style. On the other hand, there's Hulk who seems to like punching the crap out of things until they either die or...well, I guess that's all that they do. Regardless of what I say, this battle comes down to you! Make sure you cast your vote and see to it that only the best of the best is crowned arena champion!
As always, if you’re a part of the Awesome Arena pool, make sure you head on over to For The Love of Comics and let CrackerBob know who you’ve got your money on this week. In order to successfully keep track of the points, he’ll need to know who you’re picking! Good luck everyone!
Result: The Hulk defeats Wolverine and moves on to the next round.

In the WWH X-Men tie-in, the Hulk demolished Wolverine and the entire Astonishing team. Hulk wins easily here.

People seem to forget that Hulk has a healing factor, too. It’s not as powerful as Wolverine’s, but it doesn’t need to be.
I say Hulk takes this one. It’s not a kill, but it’s a definite victory.

Shit this one’s tough but it’s gonna come down to who can take down the other the fastest. So with that said I’m going with the Hulk. And this is how I think he’d do it:
The Hulk and Wolverine enter the ring. Wolverine trash talks a little which just pisses the Hulk off more. The bell sounds and the two combatants blast out of the corners, charging at one another. Wolverine gets there first with his trademark claws out and ready for rippin’. He ducks below the Hulk and stabs him in the back of his right thigh and his left kidney. The Hulk roars in pain. Wolverine just fucked himself. The Hulk swings around violently, tossing Wolverine back first into his own corner. The Hulk charges after him and lands a huge fist right in Wolverines face. Wolverine is out cold but The Hulk isn’t done just yet. He follows up his attack with some major blows to the body, causing Wolverine massive internal bleeding. Finally the Hulk lifts Wolverine compact frame clear over his head and throws him clear out of the arena.

I think it really depends just how mad the Hulk is when he enters the arena. If he’s WWH mad, it’s a no contest. However, if he’s just normal-mad, I can see Wolverine actually standing a chance.
How pissed off do you think he’d be after getting tossed into a tournament with no warning?

Okay, okay, it’s a tough decision, but I go with the Hulk for this one. I’ll post my battle breakdown over at For The Love of Comics, but I think with his sheer power, and the healing abilities he does have, he would just rip Wolverine apart.

Nice job on the new site for the Awesome Arena! Wolvie wins btw.

Thanks Robert!
I’m glad someone agrees with me about Wolverine. I seriously doubt that Hulk would be as mad as he was during WWH which leads me to believe that Wolverine could and would beat him.

I’m really going against my heart on this one, but Hulk doesn’t need to be WWH-level angry to beat Wolverine - he beat him in their very first battle and can beat him now, no matter what level he’s at.
Wolverine’s a badass and I’d love for him to win, just like I would have loved to see Green Arrow win last week. But, also like Green Arrow last week, Wolverine just doesn’t have the power levels to pull it off like Sentry, Wendigo, Thor, Hercules, or Ares may have and he doesn’t do the whole use technology to power him down like Iron Man or Mr. Fantastic might do. Wolverine’s a bare-knuckles, brute force brawler and he’s not going to be able to beat Hulk that way.

Alright, I know I said I wasn’t going to be playing for any prizes and just playing for the sake of fun. And I am. But I’d like to know if there are going to be any 2nd or 3rd place prizes? Again I am still playing just for fun but a prize wouldn’t make it less fun. =P

As of right now, there aren’t any plans for a 2nd or 3rd place prize. Although, to be honest, we’re still working out all the details for a first place prize so it’s not totally out of the question.
We’ll have a final prize setup posted shortly.

Yeah, Mike and I definitely need to get together and make sure we have a full listing of prizes and their descriptions.
It’s also not completely out of the question for there to be second and third place prizes….
Mike and I probably need to have a behind-the scenes huddle on this one.
